Privacy Considerations

Overview

User profiles and attributes are powerful tools to unlock rich storytelling within your app. However, there are a set of considerations to take into account to protect user privacy and comply with regulations.

Understand What Data You're Collecting

Protecting user privacy starts with planning what data you are going to collect in the first place. We recommend keeping an up-to-date data inventory at all times.

Leverage Local Dynamic Data

When data can be used to enhance a user's experience but isn't needed for segmentation, we recommend supplying that data as local dynamic data instead of user attributes.

For example, it's highly unlikely you'll want to use a user's name to build a segment but personalizing a post with a name is a great way to make a connection with your users.

Think about what data is needed for segmentation versus what data can be kept on-device via local dynamic data.

Know When to Ask for Permission

User data sent to Flagship is solely used for delivering your app experience and is never shared with third parties.

However, there may be cases where you're required by law or by platform policy to get explicit consent from users prior to building a user profile. This is especially true when the data is used to track users across apps/sites (e.g. retargeting) or when the data is coming from or going to a data broker.

We recommend consulting counsel if you are unsure of how these policies may apply to you.

Let Users Opt-Out

Apple, Google, and some localities require by law that users are able to access and/or delete the information collected from them. This is sometimes referred to as the "right to be forgotten."

You should create a section within your app where users can request account deletion and ensure your app continues to function without the need for an account or user profile (when applicable).

If you receive a request to delete a user's account, it's important to let Branding Brand know so that we can comply
